To commemorate the second anniversary of the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged protests around the country on August 5, 2025. For the party, which is calling for his immediate release and contesting the recent convictions of more than 100 top PTI officials connected to the 2023 riots, the day held symbolic significance. The government responded by prohibiting public meetings in Islamabad and other major cities under Section 144 and threatening to take severe measures against anybody who disobey it. PTI supporters came together in a number of places to express solidarity in spite of security limitations and the arrests of important individuals. The demonstration tested PTI's fortitude and tenacity in the face of mounting political pressure and legal issues, casting doubt on the party's future course and capacity to organize in the face of official repression.
Since true democracy depends on the independence of institutions, the establishment shouldn't meddle in the legal system. The rule of law is compromised and public confidence in the legal system is damaged when influential parties have an impact on court rulings. Justice must be unbiased, open, and unaffected by military or political coercion. A country can only defend its citizens' rights and preserve democratic values by guaranteeing an impartial and independent judiciary. Interference harms the nation's long-term stability and unity in addition to undermining the legitimacy of justice.
Regardless of political differences, a leader shouldn't be treated that way, in my opinion. As a prominent player in Pakistani politics and a former prime minister, Imran Khan is entitled to a fair trial, legal protection, and dignity. Instead of being suppressed or treated unfairly, political conflicts should be resolved via discussion and democratic institutions. Harsh treatment of leaders erodes the basis of democracy, justice, and national cohesion and creates a worrying precedent.
