Pakistan's northern regions are well-known for their breathtaking scenery, snow-capped mountains, and verdant valleys. However, the devastating effects of climate change are now being felt by these beautiful locations, which include Thoi Yasin, Taus Yasin, Ishkoman Ghizer, Gulmit Hunza, and numerous other valleys.
Floods, landslides, and glacial melting have started to strike Gilgit-Baltistan with frightening vigor in recent weeks. For days or weeks, the roads that connect these regions to the larger cities are closed, depriving the local population of access to hospitals, markets, and essential supplies. Once lush and productive, agricultural regions are now destroyed. Families have lost their main source of food and money due to the significant damage to crops. Unexpected calamities have entirely destroyed many homes, leaving families homeless amid harsh weather.
The government's inaction during this crisis is its most tragic aspect. Because of its high geography and delicate ecosystem, authorities have long recognized that Gilgit-Baltistan will be the first and hardest affected by climate change. However, no significant efforts have been made to develop plans for disaster assistance, upgrade infrastructure, or install early warning systems. Centuries-old communities, livelihoods, and lives are being lost as a result of this carelessness.
For Gilgit-Baltistan, climate change is not a threat of the future; rather, it is already occurring. These valleys' residents are struggling to survive, and their voices need to be heard. We run the risk of permanently losing this special region's natural beauty and cultural legacy if immediate action is not taken.
