Since Gilgit-Baltistan's local authority was unable to provide assistance right away, the tenacious residents of Danyor made the decision to act independently. In an encouraging display of community cohesion, they started rebuilding the channel using their own resources because they were determined to restore their only source of water. But a tragic turn of events was ahead. The building site was situated perilously near a mountain that had recently been undermined by flooding. Workers were buried beneath boulders and dirt when the mountain suddenly fell in a destructive avalanche. Eight innocent lives were lost in a matter of seconds.
This catastrophe is not an isolated event; rather, it is a direct result of environmental degradation, global warming, and government failure. In addition to mourning the loss of their loved ones, the inhabitants of Danyor are currently without access to potable water for farming or drinking.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that climate change is a real concern that is harming lives in Pakistan's most beautiful yet vulnerable areas. More towns like Danyor will suffer the same fate if immediate action is not taken. It's time for the international community, NGOs, and the government to intervene, offer short-term assistance, and implement long-term policies to shield these priceless alpine areas from the catastrophic effects of climate change.
